In other words...
While working through a scenario with a standardized patient (actor) this morning, I enquired as to whether or not he had ever had a colonoscopy before. He then asked me "what's a colonoscopy?". I started to stammer out something regarding a tube but I couldn't think of how to get the words right. So I asked my tutor how one would explain a colonoscopy in layman's terms to which he replied "you ask if they've ever had a camera up their bum" which my classmate quickly followed up with "in the presence of a doctor".
Now, for those who know what a colonoscopy is (even if they don't know what the procedure is called), this isn't so bizarre. But I can only imagine the day when I ask some unsuspecting individual (perhaps via an interpreter) if they've ever had a colonoscopy and anticipate the look of shock and disgust as they wonder exactly what kind of medical office they have stumbled into (and may never return to).
